How to Choose a Tablecloth Size: A No-Overthink Guide

Most tablecloth confusion comes down to one missed step: people measure the tabletop and forget the drop. The drop is the part that makes a table feel finished — the difference between a covered table and a set table. Here's the no-overthink way to size a tablecloth, with a chart you can save.

The two numbers you need

Before you shop, get these two numbers:

  1. Your table dimensions. For rectangles, length × width in inches (or cm — but most charts are in inches). For round tables, diameter. For square tables, one side length.
  2. Your desired drop. Drop is how far the cloth hangs over the edge — measured down from the tabletop. Standard options: casual (6–8″), formal (12–18″), floor-length (24–30″).

The math is simple: tablecloth size = table size + (2 × drop) on each measured dimension.

The cheat sheet by table type

If math isn't your thing, here's the chart most of our customers actually use:

Your table Casual drop (8″) Formal drop (12–15″)
4-seat round (≤48″ diam) 60″ round 72″ round
6-seat rectangle (60″×36″) 76″×52″ → use 90″×60″ 90″×66″ → use 108″×70″
8-seat rectangle (72″×42″) 88″×58″ → use 90″×60″ 102″×72″ → use 108″×70″
10-seat rectangle (96″×42″) 112″×58″ → use 120″×60″ 126″×72″ → use 140″×72″
Holiday extension (12+ seats) up to 160″×72″ up to 190″×72″
4-seat square (44″×44″) 60″×60″ 72″×72″

What "drop" actually means and why it matters

Casual drops (6–8″) read brunch-y and easy — fine for everyday family meals, kid-friendly, doesn't pool on chairs. Formal drops (12–18″) read dinner party — the cloth covers the chair backs from the top so the table looks finished from any angle. Floor-length drops (24–30″) read wedding-or-event — typical on round rentable tables. For most home dinners, formal drop wins.

Common mistakes

Mistake 1: Measuring the table only, not accounting for chairs. Chairs slide under at different distances. If your chairs go all the way under, the cloth will lay flat over them — funny look. If you size up by even one drop level, you avoid this.

Mistake 2: Going too short for hospitality settings. A 90″×60″ tablecloth on an 8-seat dining table looks marooned. When in doubt, size up.

Mistake 3: Buying for the table only, not the season. Holiday extensions throw off everything. If you ever pull a leaf in or extend the table, buy for the longer configuration — it will drape forgivingly when the table is shorter.

Sizing in unusual cases

  • Picnic tables / banquet rentals. Standard rental rectangles are 6′ (72″) or 8′ (96″) long, 30″ wide. A 90″×60″ tablecloth gives a casual drop on a 6′ table; size up to 108″×60″ for formal.
  • Outdoor festival tables. Wind matters more than drop. Size for the table, then weight the corners with napkin rings or clips.
  • Side tables / occasional tables. A 60″×60″ square tablecloth covers most side tables with a long drop and looks intentional.

FAQ

Q: Linen vs. cotton — does it matter for sizing? Slightly. Linen drapes loose and forgives small size mistakes; cotton holds its shape more, so size carefully. (Or just buy cotton — see our cotton vs. linen comparison for the full case.)

Q: Can I machine-wash a 190-inch tablecloth? Yes — cold water, gentle cycle, large-capacity machine. Line dry to avoid tangling. Iron on the reverse on warm, in sections.

Q: How do I store oversize tablecloths? Fold and store flat in a breathable cotton bag, with one or two cedar blocks to keep moths off. Avoid plastic bins (cotton needs to breathe).
